The Avengers (2012)

Discovered on Monday, May 07, 2012

The Avengers (2012)seen @ UA Kaufman Studios Cinema 14, Long Island City, Queens, NY5.4.12The truth is, I don't ever recall being ostracized for reading comic books as a kid. I remember certain friends I shared them with, though those weren't many. My parents were never opposed to them; in fact, my father used to drive me to the comic shop on Saturdays at one point. I never felt protective of my level of fandom as a child. I never had to justify it in any way, and I suppose in that I was lucky. At some po... read more »

Learning the Ropes

Discovered on Tuesday, April 24, 2012

On the morning of Good Friday, I volunteered my services to be a belayer for a patrol of Scouts conducting a rock climbing expedition in the Higgovale Quarry in Oranjezicht. Rock climbing is certainly not my forte, if anything, I suffer from vertigo, so it’s needless to say that I didn’t know much about the world of climbing. Belaying is surprisingly easy to pick up, and as I was required to keep my feet planted firmly on the ground, it appealed to me a lot more than scouring the quarry walls for hand ... read more »

Caving...Plotting Oread Halls, Boomslang and Wh...

Discovered on Friday, April 20, 2012

I have read many articles about the caves which can be found in and around the Cave Peak, Kalk Bay area in the hopes of finding out where exactly these wondrous excavations may be located. Some of these articles seem to almost discourage too many people from caving in the area due to their destructive natures. That was at least my interpretation of what I assume was the hidden message behind the text. I suppose I can agree with them, at least partially. Many of what could be beautiful settings around cav... read more »

The Hunger Games

Discovered on Thursday, March 29, 2012

The Hunger Gamesseen @ Center Cinema 6, Sunnyside, Queens, NY3.27.12Recently, I wrote about a blind spot I tend to have for certain fanboy movies, and I tried to be as honest as possible with myself about the possible reasons why. Looking back on it now, I feel fairly confident that the conclusions I came to are the right ones, based on my experience and my biases. One thing that subsequently occurred to me came as I wrote to my pal Bibi about this: in recent years, I've been cutting myself off from more... read more »
