It should go without saying that here there be spoilers for ROSEMARY'S BABY. Also VERTIGO for some reason. It's not uncommon for a lotto change when a novel makes a transition to the silver screen. There are many reasons for that, I suppose. Some books have stories that simply would not translate well to cinema, inherently literary. Others are too epic in scope and must be pared down to fit into a two or three hour film. Sometimes the writer/director has his own ideas and just uses the book as a jumping o... read more »
I love biopics! Ever since cinema came to be, it's presented stories about real people--some dead, some living, some famous some infamous. They allow us to witness famous figures as they had been, could have been, or--in many cases--should have been. It's like watching "Real World" except there's something more extraordinary involved than ab muscles that flex without exertion. I have come to know movies as "fiction" because no film (you hear me--NONE) should be taken as history. Movies always take licens... read more »
Although Sight and Sound Magazine recently anointed my personal favorite, Vertigo as the greatest film of all time, my wife, Lisa, always preferred an earlier Alfred Hitchcock/Jimmy Stewart pairing, Rear Window. Out of the two choices, it's the more approachable and epitomizes Hitchcock's directorial prowess better than any of his other films. Some have proclaimed Rear Window as Hitchcock's ultimate tribute to both the power and limitations of the movie-going experience. As mere observers, audiences are ... read more »
"In space, no one can hear you scream..." Recently, aclose friend of mine had justwatched Alien for the very first time in order to build anticipation for next's month's Prometheus. He was aware that a disgusting creaturewould erupt out of John Hurt's chest well before he popped in the DVD.Alien's success has become a double-edged sword. Its popularity has diluted its impact. The film is so deeply embedded in the cultu... read more »
