For persons who commit to memory when Belfast was subdued by violent behaviour and political instability, it takes some intellectual callisthenics to reflect of it in the sense of tourism. The West Belfast may keep hold of its devout divide, but in the present day its political murals are a picture opportunity for visitors. The [...] read more »
Every so often I like to bake bread, soda bread and wheaten bread being the two obvious choices as they are the easiest breads to make and that suits my temperament. I like things to be easy. Last week I decided to try to bake Belfast bap. Belfast baps are absolutely gorgeous light mouth watering deliciousness inside a crispy slightly burnt top. It was dreamt up by baker Barney Hughes in the 1800's. A cheap life saving food in a time when the potato blight brought famine to Ireland. He made afforda... read more »

One thing I couldn’t help noticing was the careful placing of high v... read more »
I am sitting this morning nursing my head in one hand and typing with the other...I would look for some sympathy but won’t as my pain is self inflicted so not worthy of sympathy. I will just sit here and groan and gently weep into my coffee cup....Poor me! Belfast’s big gay party is getting bigger and bigger and the crowd is getting younger and younger and I am getting beyond it all (if this morning is anything to go by). I managed to get into town in time for the parade, although I must say initially ... read more »

The Potato Genome Sequencing Consortium (PGSC), an international team of scientists, focused on sequencing the genome of potato, has just published its findings in the international journal Nature. Analysis of the genome sequence data has revealed that the potato genome contains approximately 39,000 protein coding genes. The analysis also reveals that the potato genome has undergone extensive genome duplication though evolution. Currently the potato is the world's third most important food crop. But i... read more »
