The transplants I planted last month are starting to take off. It has been a little cooler than usual the last several weeks so things have not been growing fast just yet. But I do now have some blooms on the tomatoes and squash, and most everything is looking pretty good. The only disease issue I see right now is fungus on the cucumbers and peas - I mixed a teaspoon of baking powder with 32 oz water and sprayed on the cucumbers and peas to see if that will help clear up the fungus problems they seem to h... read more »
Last weekend I cleared out the old vegetation that was left over from last season's garden. I am downsizing my garden a little bit this season. The raised bed gardens are so much easier that I removed my drip tubing from everywhere except the raised beds, and for this season I am only using my four raised beds. Also, I did not grow any new plants from seeds for this season, but instead I just used transplants for everything new this Spring. I still plan to raise more transplants from seed in the future, ... read more »
In spite of the issues I had this Spring with caterpillars and tree rats, I have been blessed with several very nice harvests. I have been busy the past few weeks and I have not updated this blog as often as I would have liked. In this post I will summarize the harvests I had last month from the vegetable garden.
Georgia Collard Greens harvested May 4th
First Tomatoes (Celebrity) harvested this season on May 10th

Harvested another nice fresh cucumber that was just perfect. Also harvested some red and green Romain. And found a couple of Gold Rush Squash that was bug free. I still have a lot of lettuce left that is bolting that I need to pick soon.
Red and Green Romain, Cucumber, and Gold Rush SquashUnfortunately I am still finding caterpillar damage to about half of the squash. BT seems to help but the caterpillars continue their damage.

The additional seedlings I started a few weeks ago were past due to planting in larger pots.
The cherry tomatoes did not want to germinate, but everything else did great.

Also had a nice harvest.
large Spaghetti Squash, Mustard Greens, Red Leaf Lettuce, and Cucumber
I noticed while harvesting the cucumber that some of the cucumber vines looked like they might be suffering from a nitrogen deficiency. I do not... read more »
I have been busy with other things the last several days and have really not done much new in the garden lately other than harvesting a few things, included what is pictured below. The BT that I applied to the Squash seems to be doing the job - I have not seen any more caterpillars lately. I probably need to apply another treatment soon as a preventive measure. I do have some fungus spots on several leaves of various plants - probably due to the warmer weather and increased humidity. I need to plan to do... read more »
The Cucumber vines are really spreading out and doing great. I am just letting them fall over the raised bed and into the mulched areas around the bed.
I am also finding an abundance of tomatoes growing on all the vines now.
There are also now some really large Spaghetti and Acorn Squash. I am not sure how much longer I will wait on these. They do seem to be getting bigger every day but I think I will harvest a couple soon.

The new academic year has just started and my eight year old has been promoted to grade 3. I just cant imagine how soon days and months have flown by.Although he was a little disappointed that some of his friends from the previous class were not going to the same class with him ,he was as anxious to meet new friends and teachers. Today his class is going to learn about healthy food and eating a wellproportioned diet consisting of all the three food groups. This is to create awareness among children as wel... read more »
