It’s not often that I look forward to receiving an online purchase with unabated glee. But it is often that i receive them from the post or mail person and rip open the packaging in a rush of excitement and play it. Especially DVD’s or CD’s. I must admit I do love the feeling of going record shopping and discovering them personally rather than via the cold exterior of the net. But, on this occasion I had no choice. For Shina Ringo’s excellent catalog is not available outside of Asia unless by mail order.... read more »
Many readers will know that I do review a few Japanese releases on this blog, and whilst normally I'm reviewing releases from an artist perhaps unknown beyond Japan this time I'm reviewing one very well known to many in my hometown - I've seen them various times on stage or whilst out on a walk in Liverpool passing by during festivals such as Sound City - and if you haven't guessed by now that artist is Stealing Sheep. Recently, whilst on the site that shall not be named I was looking at a friends collection of photographs of Japan and one of them included the Japanese version of the Walmart concept, Don Quihote, which is a shop that never fails to amuse and entertain. As a sugar deprived being I used to spend my hard earned yen on the vast cornucopia of wel... read more »
I'm tidying up the older posts on the site a bit and keep discovering some gems! Here's one that very occasionally gets some attention and one that is also based on reality. The walls were wooden and vaguely comforting in a strange kind of way. They were also littered with pictures of Mickey Mouse and other juvenile characters who were popular with Japanese. I was sitting down on the polished wooden bench of CoCo Club, an eikaiwa salon that used to be located in the downtown area of Tokyo they call Nippo... read more »
At first, I had to admit to some scepticism. After all, there are so many publications that simply stick the name Japan to their product to garner that je-ne sais quoi cool factor that it gets hard to distinguish the crap from the gold at times. And, after the glory that the last internationally released publication centering in Japanese Street Art Rackgaki basked in, how can one top the thrill that that particular book gave, and still gives, on every read?Well, despite the proliferation of the same pict... read more »
