In a previous review of what is regarded by many as Shiina Ringo’s career highpoint, the third album Karuki Zamen Kuri no Hana, we described it as a rather dark and impenetrable album despite its greatness. Listening to it for this series of reappraisals we’re verging on a slight revision of that opinion. In the catalogue of Shiina Ringo the benchmark for quality almost always lays at Karuki Zamen Kuri no Hana – her third album. For many reasons it’s cited as her best and for many reasons it’s hard to... read more »
Price Range : Splurge Cuisine : Japanese (Sushi) Recommended For : Finding out how sushi is MEANT to be Catphobia-Friendly? : Yes Articles after articles about the sushi at Tsukiji Fish Market conclude with a unanimous “You will never see sushi in the same way again.” It is not hard to believe their confident claims, what with Tsukiji Fish Market being the largest seafood market in the world! Where else would you find the freshest, plumpest piece of tuna for breakfast? There are two popular su... read more »
“That tricky second album” is a quote rarely heard. But when you consider just how different Shousou Strip is from its predecessor Muzai Moratorium you could very coin such a phrase. It begins with a bassfueledbang – literally – and an invisible orchestral flourish and it’s a start that’s hard to better. Quite how ear catching it is, is hard to explain unless you hear it. But rest assured for those new to this album that it’s a good beginning. The sound for Shouso Strip is somewhat more even, with a ... read more »
Have you ever mixed a completely random cocktail – either as an adult or a child? Did it consist of random elements of whatever you had to hand at the time, mixed to perfection by your curious hands? Japanese band Polysics describes their music as “technicolor pogo punk” and it’s hard not to picture the band pogoing around in a technicolor landscape to this completely absorbing but perfectly silly music. With a fifteen year career behind them it’s clear that they’ve become experts at this kind of thi... read more »
Price Range : Mid-range Cuisine : Japanese (Donburi) Recommended For : A filling pit-stop to fuel a full-on shopping session Catphobia-Friendly? : Yes! (No stray cats at all on the streets of Tokyo! Hurrah!) There are two main reasons why Ameyoko is always packed with pedestrians: 1) it is a haven for budget shoppers and 2) it is a haven for food lovers! Finding ourselves fitting comfortably in both categories, we took the train to Ueno to witness and savour first-hand this highly-recommended s... read more »

Price Range : Mid-range Cuisine : Desserts Recommended For : The best Japanese cheese cake in town! Catphobia-Friendly? : Yes This little place in Bangsar Village has always been our trusted go-to bakery whenever a (rather specific) craving for Japanese cheese cake hits! The thing about Japanese cheese cake is that it is arrestingly divine and perfectly embodies all that is right in the cake world: soft and creamy, smooth and pillowy, dense yet airy... The fact that it is very light makes it a gre... read more »
