Bilal participated in his first mini karate tournament yesterday. It was basically just the kids who train at the elementary school, but for Bilal it was a big deal because he's never participated in a tournament. The students were divided into small groups of three or four, and they did their kata and sparred against them. The JIKA Dojo held a car wash/ bake sale Saturday morning, for the students who are heading to the national tournament. The boys participated in their Dojo's Valentine karate demonstration at a local nursing home today. Our Sensei comes once a week to train with the residents of the nursing home, and today some new belts were awarded to the residents. Bilal tested for his next karate belt today. Tested, and got promoted! Now he has an orange/black belt to replace his solid orange one. He continues to move up the ranks with each test. Today was one of those great test days when everyone who participated was promoted. Congrats to all! Bilal is still not feeling great, although he has been back at school. Bilal's teacher has a great way to incentivize good behavior. Each child gets to punch a card at the end of day as long as they have not misbehaved. After five holes they have a choice to either pick a small toy or piece of candy from the teacher's treasure chest, or they may bring home a fuzzy class pet for two days.
