Moneyball

content discovered on Wednesday, September 28, 2011

Moneyballseen @ Jamaica Multiplex Cinemas, Jamaica, Queens, NY9.27.11I first found out about the book Moneyball several years ago from a different baseball book, which made a number of passing references to it as a shorthand metaphor for the changing nature of the game. I, of course, didn't understand the reference at the time, so I looked it up and decided I wanted to read this book too. I had long ago stopped following baseball on a regular basis, but I never abandoned my love of the game itself. I kne... read more »

Zack and Miri Make a Porno

content discovered on Friday, August 26, 2011

Zack and Miri Make a Pornofirst seen @ Arena Grand Theatre, Columbus OH2008At the Third Avenue video store, we had a decent sized porn section. It was all the way in the back, to the left of the register as you entered the store. This was in the late 90s, so everything was still VHS. The oversized boxes ('cause size matters, dont'cha know) were hung on pegs on both sides of a tiny little alcove. The bathroom, appropriately enough, was at the end of the little hall (but only we held the key to it; it was ... read more »

Metropolis

content discovered on Friday, August 05, 2011

Metropolislast seen @ Celebrate Brooklyn, Prospect Park Bandshell, Brooklyn NY8.4.11As often as I hang out in Brooklyn, I don't go to Prospect Park that often, though I try to whenever I can. It's a wonderful park, with all sorts of attractions in and around it - Grand Army Plaza, the library, the museum and the botanical gardens are all within its vicinity; the Bandshell and the Zoo are among its major highlights, and downtown Brooklyn is only minutes away. Since I never grew up in Brooklyn or went to s... read more »

My dream movie theater

content discovered on Tuesday, August 02, 2011

My initial impulse would be to take the Jackson and renovate it. (This is all, of course, assuming money is not an issue.) That place has many of the elements I would want in a movie theater: it's small (three screens), it's easily accessible to public transportation, it has an old-fashioned marquee where one can see everything that's playing at a glance. I wonder, however, whether or not it's too small. I might prefer something more like the Drexel - a stylish Art Deco look, with a few more screens, plu... read more »
