Remembering the Dead and Other Controversies

content discovered on Wednesday, April 10, 2013

The Netherlands has a complex legacy when it comes to World War II. Unlike the Allied nations that were in a clear position to deem themselves WWII victors after Germany was divided up, as a territory occupied from the get go, the Dutch never had that privilege. The Netherlands was home to not only the Dutch Resistance, but also many, many other brave men and women assisting Allied troops in any clandestine way... read more »

A short guide to Rotterdam

content discovered on Wednesday, April 18, 2012

After much of the city was levelled during World War 2, Rotterdam underwent a period of reconstruction which has given the city and its architecture a modern feel when compared to many similar European cities. This rebuilding process has caused something of an architectural renaissance in the city, and many of Europes finest architects have [...] read more »

The Secret Life of Bletchley Park, Reviewed.

content discovered on Monday, January 23, 2012

Image via Wikipedia AChristmas present, this was a book I was unlikely to pick up for myself. However,I'm very pleased I was given the gift. WWII is long gone, of course, and formany of the younger generation probably holds little interest. I was born someyears after its end and my parents were involved, of course, so it has somepersonal resonance for me. Ihad, of course, heard of Bletchley Park; the place has shed its cloak ofsecrecy over the past few years. Several books, TV documentaries and other... read more »

Continuing the #NaNoWriMo Challenge.

content discovered on Sunday, January 22, 2012

Image via WikipediaThis week has seen much activity outside of writing, a lot of it to do with my daughter, who I've just returned to her place at university, hence the lateness of this post. However, I'm well on with the current read, The Secret Life of Bletchley Park, and I've read another of my writing magazines. As far as the current WIP is concerned, I'm now up to chapter 15 on the first read-through and still finding little that needs amending. Mind you, once I do the reading aloud from a typescrip... read more »

Writing: the Pen or the Keyboard?

content discovered on Thursday, January 12, 2012

Image via Wikipedia Writers are a funny bunch. We each have our own self-imposedrules, routines, favourites and hates. I know of authors who can no more createat the keyboard than they can lay an egg. But my method of composition now dependsutterly on the keyboard. This is despite the fact that I can't touch type anduse only two fingers (not those two!) and a thumb (either will do, I'm notprejudiced). I have to look at the keyboard as I write and then glance at thescreen, with Word's spelling correction... read more »

Major Changes and a Big-Ass Book

content discovered on Friday, September 09, 2011

So I  know my last few posts have not necessarily concerned writing per se, and the reason for that being, I have not written much in the past week. Im working on that, but Ive been stuck in a bit of a dry spell which is ironic since New York decided to honor all its [...] read more »

Those Who Save Us

content discovered on Wednesday, April 20, 2011

Another book set during World War II? Another novel about the Holocaust? Yes. Just finished reading "Those Who Save Us" by Jenna Blum. I was absolutely unable to put it down - finished it in 3 days. This historical novel alternates between the 1940's and the 1990's. The main characters are Anna and her daughter Trudie. The sections of the book in the 40's are setin Germany and told from Anna's point of view. Fifty years later, Trudie and Anna are living in Minnesota and we see through Trudie's point of vi... read more »
